If you are using our editing service you will need to source music that matches the BPM of your horse's gait and also fits your vision for the routine. If you need help at any stage then feel free to contact us.

You can either think of a few pieces of music you might like to use and check the BPM's using online databases such as www.bpm4djs.com and/or www.bpmdatabase.com to see if they fit your horse.

Alternatively, you could use the same services to list tracks that are at the same BPM as your Horse's gaits.

Tip: You might want to try experimenting with half- and double-time when looking for music. For example, if you've calculated your horses tempo to be 160BPM then a piece of music at 80BPM would land on every other footfall. Similarly, if you calculate the tempo to be 70BPM, a piece at 140BPM would line-up but with a double-time feel. As long as the music fits the routine

If you want to listen to music we recommend the preview function on iTunes or the free, totally legal Spotify - www.Spotify.com

We will check for you whether the music you selected is in the PPL repertoire and therefore covered by British Dressage's licence with PPL. However, the ultimate liability falls to you so you can check yourself here.

www.Equimusic.com also has some valuable information.

Things to Consider

Tracks with vocals can sound great if they are edited properly, but be careful when selecting them as vocals can be distracting. We are able to advise you on this if you aren’t sure.

A strong beat is important so you know where you are and the music appears better synchronised with the routine. That said, there are times when the rhythm will be lost (turns etc) so a less obvious beat at these points can be an advantage.

Consider the judges. This does not necessarily mean choose music they would like but be sure to choose music that fulfills the musical interpretation element of the scoring.

Remember that a few factors will influence how well your routine will sync to the music including the surface, the mood of the horse and the size of the arena
